In ancient Palestine, the Hebrews are held in bondage to the Philistines. Samson, the leader of the Hebrews, leads his people in a revolt against the Philistines. His amazing strength defeats all foes. Unfortunately, a beautiful Philistine woman, Dalila, seduces him. He tells her the secrets of his strength, and the Philistines conquer the Hebrews again. In the end, Samson is able to conjure up his strength one last time to destroy both the Philistines and himself.
Saint-Saens’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila stars Elina Garanca and Roberto Alagna in the title roles. Laurent Naouri co-stars as the High Priest, with Elchin Azizov as the Philistine King Abimelech and Dmitry Belosselskiy as the Old Hebrew. Darko Tresnjak makes his Met debut directing the first new Met production of the opera in 20 years. Sir Mark Elder conducts.
